City ranking

Best Pizza in Cincinnati

Cincinnati is the pizza market I know best, and it is much better than many outsiders assume. The city’s first pizzerias emerged during the pizza boom of the late 1940s, though my great-grandmother (and presumably plenty of other Italian immigrants) had been making pizza here for decades.

Cincinnati has long had strong pizzerias like Trotta’s and Adriatico’s, but for years its pizza identity was scattered among neighborhood shops, doughy tavern pies, and plenty of generic, cheese-heavy pizza with bland crusts. That has changed.

Wayfarer has seriously elevated tavern style. St. Francis makes an East Coast pie that could hold its own in New York. Rossville and Little Hill make excellent wood-fired pizza, while Taglio produces a Detroit-style pie that rivals the Motor City’s best. The city’s strong bakery culture also produces plenty of top-tier bakery squares and focaccia slices.

There is still plenty of mediocre pizza in Cincinnati, though even mediocre pizza is usually plenty tasty. But the city’s best pizzerias are nationally serious, not merely “good for Cincinnati.”
