A repeat visit (always a good sign) to this “Neapolitanish” pizza pop-up. I reviewed @companionpizza last year as takeout pizza from Oakley Wines. This time, we tried them for a sit-down meal at @kingpigeoncinci (one of my favorite haunts). As reflected in my last year of reviews, I believe some of the best pizza in Cincinnati these days comes from pop-ups.
Companion offers a particularly soft/light take on Neapolitan pizza (I’d speculate this is likely due to using low-gluten flour). The slow-rise dough had a great flavor and was artfully charred on the top, making it a beautiful-looking pie. The bottom was more lightly charred - so it was a soft foldable, rather than crisp, slice.
I don’t usually get into toppings as much in reviews, but they are definitely worth highlighting at Companion. Featured here is the Dilly Peas, which features “Whipped Goat Cheese Base, Herbed Ricotta Rosettes, Snap Peas, Spicy Dill Pickled Fennel, Housemade ‘Otherthings’ Seasoning, Lemon, Dill, & Chive.” We also ordered a side of whipped feta - which I highly recommend. Overall, it was a delicious combination & deftly avoided the sogginess endemic to Neapolitan style. I believe they have another pop-up planned at @kingpigeoncinci tonight (Thursday) - hit them up.

We tried this Neapolitanish pop-up a couple Sundays ago for some Bengals watch party pizza. Fortunately, the pizza worked out much better than the Bengals-Titans debacle. I picked up their pie from @oakleywines & and you might notice some shots looks like they’re taken on the hood of my car. Pictured here is the “Bloody Mary” pizza. It features house vodka sauce, fresh mozzarella, cornichon, pepperoncini, castelvetrano olive, shaved celery and a celery seed crust - Really a delicious combination of toppings.
The slow rise dough had a great flavor and was artfully charred on the top - making it a beautiful looking pie. The bottom was more lightly charred and consequently the slices were more doughy & bendable than crisp. We also ordered a side of whipped feta, which was a delicious crust dip. Overall, I was impressed by @companionpizza and hope to have their pizza again soon.
