June Bug
Boston · Neapolitan Style · Aug 2025

June Bug (Somerville, MA) is a serious addition to the Boston-area pizza scene from the thoughtful team at @field_and_vine. I might describe @junebugrestaurant as the kind of spot where Gordon Wood devotees get quizzed on apples over drinks. The operation is anchored by a giant copper-plated wood-fired oven, where form meets function: visually striking and producing consistent heat that gives the crust its balance of char, chew, and lift. The room matches the food - curated art, yellow tables, flickering candles, pizzas perched on tomato cans. In a space like this, the design itself signals the level of care in the kitchen.
I enjoyed everything we had, but the pizza deserves the focus. The wood-fired crust showed well-blistered edges, leopard spotting, and a deep fermentation flavor that made it compelling on its own. It was slightly thicker and crisper than typical Neapolitan examples, which often lean softer. Personally, I would have preferred it just thirty seconds longer in the oven—a reflection of American taste more than Italian tradition.
As for toppings, the pepperoni and onion pie was a classic executed with precision. Pepperoni, ’nduja, and vodka sauce built layered spice and richness, while the abundance of onions added sweetness and balance. The corn and sausage pie could feel like novelty elsewhere, but here it was assured and harmonious. Sweet corn, fennel sausage, and toasted pumpkin seeds created a mix of flavors and textures that complemented the crust rather than competing with it - an early nod to New England autumn in the best possible way.
June Bug shows how careful craft, a serious oven, and a sense of place can push Boston’s much maligned pizza scene forward in meaningful ways.
