Baked by Luigi

First stop in a February NYC trip was in Gramercy Park at this E 23rd st pizzeria for slices, garlic knots, and spumoni. In my view, Luigi’s is essentially a perfect slice shop and a prototypical example of what you’re looking for in New York Style pizza. The eminently foldable slice was large, but not oversized - it looked like about a 20” pizza. The crust was very thin, crisp on the outside with some artful char, while still soft on the inside. The sauce is slightly thicker, a bit onion-forward, and quite flavorful. The cheese and toppings are plentiful but not overwhelming. I opted for a slice with pepperoni, sausage, and bacon (they were out of extra pepperoni, which they call ‘Pepperoni Crack’ slices). Also, the eggplant parmesan slice was an excellent way to enjoy eggplant. Luigi, the owner/operator, told us he comes from a family with a long and noble sausage-making tradition - Thus, sausage was an excellent choice. Overall, Luigi’s/Luigi makes a great slice of pizza.
