Massey’s Pizza
Columbus · Tavern · Mar 2024

Founded in 1949, @masseyspizza is the inventor of “Columbus Style Pizza”. That style (later spread more widely by by @Donatos) bears more than a little resemblance to Chicago-thin crust (see @vito_and_nicks) & also Dayton-style (see @cassanospizzaking & @marionspiazza). These pizzas all feature a rolled-thin crust, edge-to-edge toppings, a square/party cut, and traditional mozzarella/provolone blend (as opposed to the quite similar “St Louis style” which deviates by using Provel cheese & unleavened crust, see @imospizza). Columbus-style is very close to Chicago, but perhaps is a tad thinner and typically is provolone forward. Also, Columbus-style tends to have a ton of toppings - most famously edge-to-edge pepperoni. I had long wanted to try the original and was recently was able to enjoy Massey’s to-go …as reflected by the photos with favorable lighting on the hood of my car. I have never been a huge Donatos fan, so I did not have high hopes for this visit. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It was a vibrant flavorful pizza & a great example of bar pie.
