A ranked guide to Columbus pizza entries in The Slice Index.
Columbus has a real local pizza identity, even if the market is not as deep as Chicago or Cincinnati. And it has its own style. Columbus-style tavern pizza is thin, square-cut, provolone-heavy, and topped to the edge. Massey’s is a good example of the style working: crisp, lively, and distinct. Donatos shows the risk, with so much low-quality pepperoni and cheese that the crust can disappear underneath it. The city’s best pizza tends to come from craft-focused shops. Paulie Gee’s Columbus outpost makes a strong, foldable Neapolitan pie. GoreMade can produce an excellent wood-fired crust. Wizard of Za gives Columbus a credible square-pizza option. Columbus may not have the depth of Chicago or Cincinnati, but it has a stronger local identity than many much larger pizza cities.
